The archives of the museum are home to records of the history of the museum, records of the sources of the collections as well as the biographies of the collectors, anthropologists and those involved in the various expeditions. Records show the museum in its infant years and follow its vibrant development from its initiation on May 25th 1908 to present day.
The archive includes the bequest of former members of staff, anthropologists or travellers such as Johann Natterer, Otto Finsch, Franz Heger, Archduke Franz Ferdinand von Este, Robert Unterwelz, Wanda Hanke and Etta Becker-Donner. Some of this material has been researched, but a lot of work is still to be done.
Further information about individual collections can be found in the relevant documents. These include notes made by the individuals and their correspondence.
In the administrative archive one can find records and administrative documents relating to various individuals.
The archive for pictures includes drawings, sketches, prints and a collection of posters from various exhibitions. Transferring this material into a digital form is once again work in progress.
