From the 16th century, a typical Vietnamese variant integrated the cults of the village community's guardian spirits into the magical practice of Taoism. Priests used their mediumistic abilities to influence the weather or prevent harmful demons from harming people. The original Taoist pantheon with the spirits of clouds, rain, thunder and lightning as well as local mountain and river spirits were also included. No soul of a deceased person can reach the land of the ancestors without the guidance of a priest.

If the Dao Tien make such a costume, the ancestors and gods must be informed. After completion, it is shown to them. The priest may then only put it on during rituals.
