Khandoba was originally a powerful deity of the folk religion of central India and was only incorporated into the Hindu pantheon as an apparition of Shiva and included in religious literature in the course of Hinduization. He watches over law and order on earth. In his arms he holds one of his two wives, the high-caste Mhalsa.
