Portuguese ships sailed towards Asia to conquer key trade centres, such as Malacca in 1511, and to ultimately take over the profitable spice trade. Malacca, for example, was their door to Java, Timor, the Maluku Islands, and the Philippines.
The Portuguese brought Venetian and Bohemian glass beads and traded them for pepper, nutmeg, and cloves.
