Balarama is an avatar of the god Vishnu and the elder brother of Krishna. After his death, a white snake is said to have escaped from his mouth, which is why he is also regarded as the incarnation of the snake Shesha. In his left hand he holds a pestle, which refers to his sphere, agriculture. His right hand is raised in a chapatedana mudra, a threatening gesture.
