In contrast to the white yashmak from Constantinople, the burquʿ, a long, rectangular, black cloth of cotton muslin with a small, decorative gold or brass cylinder centred at the nose bridge, was the accessory of the bint al-balad, the local “daughter of the country”, as urban lower, or lower middle-class women were called.
