The manifestation of Shiva as Bhairava arose out of his anger at the vain but meaningless speeches of the god Brahma. By cutting off one of the god's five heads, he committed the most serious crime imaginable. This impressively demonstrates the unconventionality of Shiva's character. He was cleansed of this stain in the holy city of Benares.
