Book Binding

Introduction to the basics of book binding. Each participant will produce his/her own (note-)book using the traditional thread stitching technique.

Course instructor: Dieter Halama, book restorer, bookseller, publisher and art historian.

After the workshop, there is the opportunity to visit the exhibition Qur'an in Europe together with a cultural mediator from the museum. The exhibition is dedicated to questions such as: What role does the Holy Scripture of Islam, the Qur’an, play in the history of European ideas? How has it been read and understood in Europe since the first translations in the Middle Ages? The exhibition uses original historical objects, contemporary works of art and media installations to illustrate the countless ways in which the Koran has been experienced, read and interpreted in Europe.

Material contribution, payable to the course instructor: € 15 for cover, linen, 2 different glues, stitching thread, stitching tape, paper.
Optionally bring: 20 sheets of writing paper A4, 80-100 gr., lined or squared, white or colored (white copy paper will be provided), fold each sheet once in half to A5 format;
for the cover as desired: fabric, thin leather or thicker paper (e.g. wallpaper), format: at least 22 x 32 cm, possibly colored paper for title label, old newspaper as a base - large format
Please take the following tools with you: Sewing needle (length 4-6 cm, sharp point, larger eye, medium thickness), thimble, paperweight (stone or small weight approx. 200-500 grams).
Not absolutely necessary, but if available: Awl for pre-piercing, folding bone (or letter opener)
