Afro-Caribbean dance workshop with Karine LaBel
With live percussion by Ahmet Mbaye
For all experience levels – everyone is welcome!
On the occasion of the exhibition Calabash Nebula: Cosmological Tales of Connection by French Guiana-based artist Tabita Rezairev, the Weltmuseum Wien invites you to a special workshop with Haitian dancer Karine LaBel. The exhibition deals with cosmic connections, the Orisha Yemoja – mother of rivers and oceans – as well as the power of the elements and celestial worlds.
The workshop offers a physical and spiritual journey through Afro-Caribbean dance traditions. In Haiti, dances symbolise the connection and cohesion between the elements of nature and the here and beyond. Afro-Haitian dance has its roots in the mythical worlds of the West and Central African peoples and inspires with its strongly rhythmic movements.
Karine LaBel teaches dances that are closely connected to elements, spirits and deities – such as the water dance, the spider dance or the snake dance, which invites you to discover, purify and let go with its flowing movements.
Experience Afro-Caribbean dance art and be inspired by Karine LaBel's energy and knowledge.
