4.30 pmDeep Dive: (Re)Introducing Edith Hittmair
and her Mid-century Travel Photography in South America
In this edition of Deep Dive Tuesday, former guest researcher Nora Carolina Pearce will introduce the Viennese photographer Edith Hittmair (1934–2011) and a selection of her photographs from South America. Although over one thousand of her photographs and postcards are in the Weltmuseum Wien photography collection, Hittmair has been practically unknown to us up until very recently. Drawn to capturing Indigenous people and locals, cityscapes, and landscapes, her photographs carry the traces of her life as an expat and her love for travel. They also speak to how her positionality afforded access to a wide swathe of the continent from the time she moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina at the age of twenty-five. The discussion will look at how her photographs were key primary sources for unearthing information about the woman behind the camera. Paired with other research methods, we can now provide a more nuanced portrait of the photographer and thus engage with her work in new ways.
The event will take place in English behind the scenes of the museum.
Our Deep Dive format offers exactly what the name promises: deep insights into the working world of the Weltmuseum Wien, from the conservation department to our curatorial staff. This series also includes talks with artists, scientists, and personalities from various fields of knowledge on selected objects and topics. Our aim is to use the Weltmuseum Wien as a lively place of exchange and to confront the socio-political discourses and challenges that open up new perspectives on an extraordinary collection.
