3.30 pmIndigo Dyeing with Fresh Plants
Workshop with Anita Bauer
Dyeing with indigo is an essential cultural practice for embellishing textiles in many parts of the world. In this workshop, we will explore the colour blue from fresh madder (Persicaria tinctoria) and learn how the blue is actually produced from the plant and how it can be used for dyeing. We will experiment with different materials and observe how very different shades of blue can be produced from the same plant.
Indigo plays a major role in two special exhibitions at the Weltmuseum Wien. The Colours of the Earth. Modern Textile Art in Mexico, deals with the revival of traditional Mexican dyeing techniques and their enrichment through new processes, and in Tabita Rezaire. Calabash Nebula: Cosmological Tales of Connection, you will encounter contemporary installations made of indigo-dyed cloths dedicated to Orisha Yemoja, the patron saint of indigo.
