Sastraswara (Indonesia)

A sonic journey through gamelan sounds and live electronics

concert

Participation €16 (event ticket including museum admission)

In his sophisticated compositions, Indonesian musician Bilawa Ade Respati, better known as Sastraswara, combines the traditional Javanese gamelan play with electronic sounds and algorithmic music composition. Within the scope of the opening of Indah Arsyad’s exhibition The Ultimate Breath he is coming to Vienna for the first time.

Sastraswara, who originally studied technical physics, dedicates his works to the dialectic of innovation and tradition, spirituality and technology. His works revolve around the traditional concept of ‘Suwung’ (voidness) as an almost unattainable spiritual state. According to this concept, the ‘inner melody’ arises between the notes or at their edges, and revealing it is the very essence of playing. An impressive sonic and spiritual journey through gamelan and synthesizer sounds.

Bilawa Ade Respati has performed at the renowned CTM Festival in Berlin, among other venues, and has collaborated with numerous theatre and performance artists. He also creates walk-in sound and video installations and has played with large gamelan ensembles such as Arum Sih (Überseemuseum Bremen), Lindhu Raras (Haus der Indonesischen Kulturen Berlin) and Sekar Kenanga (Elbphilharmonie Hamburg).

To participate in the event, all guests need a valid museum ticket.
