Lecture by Johann Angerler

For five different societies in Sumatra – the Orang Rimba (hunters and gatherers), the Siberut and Petalangan (garden farmers), the Batak and Minangkabau (rice farmers on artificially irrigated fields) – wild, uncultivated nature is a numinous “source of blessing” (Reimar Schefold) as well as the basis of their ability to organize themselves as a society.

Johann Angerler (PhD, Leiden University) is a cultural anthropologist with many years of research experience in Sumatra. His research interests focus in particular on traditional political and religious institutions.

An event organized by the Weltmuseum Wien Friends. The Weltmuseum Wien Friends association offers a variety of advanced events to all those interested in the Weltmuseum Wien, such as object discussions, special guided tours, and excursions as well as film and photo presentations.
