The special exhibition Who’s Wearing the Pants? displays a replica of the earliest pair of pants ever found in a verified archaeological context. Named after the site where it was found, Turfan, in the desert region of western China, we refer to it as the “Turfan Man.” The experts highlight the Central Asian cultural area from the Bronze Age to the turn of the millennium and present well-known and unknown early trousers, which vary in material and design.

We discuss the insights that archaeological finds can provide into earlier ways of life. The focus is on the clothing of that time, and in particular trousers.

Mayke Wagner, German Archaeological Institute, Eurasia Department, Berlin, led, among other things, the research project on the earliest trousers found in China, which have been discovered in archaeological excavations to date

Karina Grömer, Natural History Museum Vienna, is involved in several international research projects on early textile finds

Bettina Zorn, curator of the East Asia Collection (China, Korea, Japan) at the Weltmuseum Wien and a graduate archaeologist
