6.30 pmThe Tibetan-Mongolian god Begtse
Lecture by Gerald Kozicz
Given what we know today about Tibetan Buddhism and the Buddhist beliefs of the Mongols, which are influenced by it, the available data on Begtse is comparatively modest. Even in European museums, sculptures or images of the Mongolian god of war are rarely found in comparison to other deities of Tibetan-Mongolian Buddhism. The lecture will first provide a summary of Begtse’s history and explain his position in the pantheon of tantric deities and his iconography, before focusing on his connection to the deities of the Yamantaka group – those deities who symbolically represent the overcoming of death. Exhibits from the Weltmuseum Wien will also be used for this comparison. While Begtse is not on display in the Weltmuseum’s permanent exhibition, Vajrabhairava and Yama Dharmaraja are very prominently represented. This allows us to trace some unexpected iconographic connections that may also open up a new perspective on the Tibet exhibition at the Weltmuseum Wien.
Gerald Kozicz has been working in the field of scientific documentation of cultures in the Himalayas and northern India since 1999. In line with his previous studies in architecture, his work focuses on the context of sacred architecture and visual arts. Since 2005, he has continuously led research projects funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) on this topic. His latest project deals, among other things, with the art of “Northern Buddhism,” especially that of the Yuan Dynasty founded by the Mongols and the Qing Dynasty of the Manchus.
