7 pmToetoe and Rerehau: Journey from Aotearoa to Vienna, 1859–1860
Online Lecture by Michael Gullery in English
In his lecture, Michael Gullery will shed light on the extraordinary voyage of Wiremu Toetoe Tumohe and Hemara Te Rerehau Paraone aboard the Austrian frigate Novara from Aotearoa (New Zealand) to Trieste and then to Vienna, where they lived from 1859 to 1860 and socialized in the highest circles. In an engaging way, historian Michael Gullery will explain what the two Māori men have to do with a famous Austrian printing press, Ferdinand von Hochstetter and the Māori King Movement (Kīngitanga), and what special significance the two men still have in New Zealand today.
Michael Gullery has studied New Zealand history and Māori culture and language for the last thirty years. His tasks nowadays revolve around bringing vanished history to life, and explaining context for the contemporary world.
