Around 100 scripts in South and Southeast Asia have developed from the Brahmi script of the 3rd century BC. They have adapted to different languages and writing materials, but have retained some common characteristics that distinguish them from other script families. We will take a look at their development and special features and examine which special solutions were necessary when transferring them to computers.

Norbert Lindenberg has been working in the field of software internationalisation for around 30 years, first at companies such as Apple, Sun Microsystems and Yahoo, then as a freelancer and as a pro bono member of the Unicode Consortium. In recent years he has focussed on standards, fonts and keyboards for Brahmic fonts. He has a degree in computer science from the University of Karlsruhe.
