WMW Contemporary

New perspectives at the Weltmuseum Wien

With WMW Contemporary, the Weltmuseum Wien launches a new format that brings its historical collections into dialogue with current social and cultural issues. In collaboration with international artists – particularly from the Global South and the diaspora – it aims to offer new perspectives, amplify marginalized voices, and critically challenge dominant narratives.
The three autumn exhibitions – Tabita Rezaire. Calabash Nebula: Cosmological Tales of Connection, The Colours of the Earth. Modern Textile Art in Mexico and Indah Arsyad. The Ultimate Breath – mark the beginning of this innovative series. In their works, the invited artists reflect on global environmental issues, neo-colonialism, identity and the relationships between Western science, indigenous knowledge and mythology. WMW Contemporary positions the Welmuseum Wien once more as a place of debate, exchange and polyphonic memory.

The exhibitions of the new format WMW Contemporary

Tabita Rezaire interweaves star constellations, the water goddess Yemoja, and traditional knowledge with modern science – in a blend of video, textile, and storytelling. Carlos Barrera Reyes collaborates with weavers in Mexico to revive ancient dyeing techniques. Indah Arsyad addresses water pollution through light, sound, and movement, bringing together mythology and scientific perspectives.
