In the late nineteenth century, the two-part face and head veil of Ottoman women, called yashmak, that once covered almost the entire face evolved into a light and transparent fashion accessory of wealthy city dwellers. In Cairo the white yashmak, rather decorative than concealing, was worn by exclusively upper-class and aristocratic women until around 1920.
