Imperial yellow jacket

huangma gua 黃馬褂

This half-length jacket is a piece of equestrian clothing of the Manchu. The colour yellow was reserved for the Imperial family. In the second half of the 19th century, these jackets represented a distinction of honour from the emperor to high-ranking officials for their civil or military service. Members of the imperial guard of honour were allowed to wear them as well. Photos show Empress Dowager Cixi, surrounded by her guards who wear these garments. This jacket was probably presented at the Vienna World's Fair of 1873.
