Necklace

2nd half of the 19th century | Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este

This necklace features Venetian millefiori glass beads that are manufactured in a highly elaborate process. In the 13th century, the artisans’ foundries were permanently moved to the island of Murano because of their high risk as fire hazards. The island’s isolated location also made sure that the secrets of Murano glass were kept under wraps.
