Plank boat, model
The boat model was made by a group of men from the Moken/Moklen ethnic minority. These people come from the island of Ko Phra Thong (Takuapa district, Phang Nga province, SW Thailand) and are currently living in a refugee camp in Kura Buri as victims of the tsunami disaster of December 26, 2004. The manufacture and sale of such boat models is a consequence of the search for alternative sources of income following the complete destruction of their equipment for traditional coastal fishing.Such longtail boats are used throughout Thailand, both on the coasts and on the rivers inland, to transport people and goods as well as for fishing.
