The Language of Things World(s) Stories at the Weltmuseum

since 22 April

The pop-up exhibition “The Language of Things” was developed as part of a school project by Schola Thomas Morus (Trumau), in cooperation with the Weltmuseum Wien and the ÖAD funding initiative “Culture Connected.” At its core is an artistic-anthropological exploration of the museum’s collection by students from grades 4, 6, and 7.

A child's craft project featuring a face made from cardboard. The face has straw for hair, two cut-out eyes, and features like a nose and mouth. Scissors and a glue bottle are visible in the surrounding area, on a red table surface.

About the Exhibition

Phase 1
05.3. – 9.4. 2026

Starting from an inventory list of around 30 objects from the permanent exhibition—deliberately without visual references—the students selected one object description and developed their own interpretations. These initial ideas were translated into drawings and three-dimensional works made from recycled materials.

Phase 2
22.4. 2026

Only after completing these imagined objects did the students encounter the originals, along with their cultural and historical contexts, at the Weltmuseum Wien.

In a subsequent writing workshop, the students created texts from different perspectives—as voices of the objects themselves or of the people who made and used them. These texts open up poetic approaches to the objects and their layered histories.
