Buddha
18./19. Jahrhundert | James Camille Samson
The historical Buddha Shakyamuni remains in deep inner contemplation. His hands lie in his lap in the gesture of meditation (samadhi mudra). Samadhi refers to the state of mind in which all dichotomies are neutralized and transcended. The meditative experience of the abolition of all opposites leads to the recognition of the emptiness of one's own self and thus to enlightenment. With his serene facial expression and inward gaze, the artist has captured in this sculpture the moment of leaving the cycle of rebirths.
