Buddha

19. Jahrhundert

The depiction of Buddha in a reclining pose with his head propped up symbolizes his entry into nirvana. Nirvana is a central concept of the Buddhist doctrine of salvation and describes the exit from the cycle of rebirths (samsara). There, greed, hatred and delusion as conditions of the cycle are extinguished, as is the thirst for existence. Mahaparinirvana occurs with the death of an "awakened one" (Buddha) and cannot be defined conceptually.
