Model of a log drum

The model, made in Nagaland, shows three men playing a dugout drum. The carved heads on the front refer to headhunting, during the ceremonies of which the drum was made to speak. Little is known about the exact contexts that led to the production of such models. The renowned drum specialist Michael Oppitz once attributed them to teaching and training purposes. It can be assumed that such models were kept in the men's communal house, the morung, as a physically visible emblem of the community.
