Mohiniattam dance costume

20. Jahrhundert | anonym

The name of this dance from Kerala is made up of the word Mohini - "a woman who charms onlookers" - and Aatta, meaning "sensual body movement". According to myths, Vishnu, as a celestial nymph, beguiled the demons with his dance to such an extent that they left the ambrosia, which bestows power and immortality, to the gods. Another time he saved Shiva from the demon Bhasmasura in this appearance. The Mohiniaattam dance expresses devotion to God and love for him.
