"Railway line from Padang to the Umbilien coal mines"

ca. 1900 | Johann Schild

This railway line, that had to traverse many metres in altitude in the valley of the Anei River, was an early and remarkable feat of engineering by Dutch engineers. Padang, whose harbour was so to speak at the end of the agricultural production line of the Minangkabau and of the coal mining operations, developed into one of the commercial centres of Sumatra.
