Reel for yarn

Note: The following text is taken from a 19th-century collection catalog and, in its language and perspective, partially reflects colonial thought patterns. We present the text in its original version to make the collection's history transparent and promote a critical examination of the colonial legacy. Reel for yarn  - "Bulelengang" A yarn bobbin made of a foot-long, vertical, round rod which can rotate on its axis on a vertical base.  At the top of this rod there are two openings bored through the rod in which four small adjustable rods have been inserted horizontally, at right angles. The ends of these small rods have half-moon shaped little pieces of wood, pointed outwards, in whose concave recess  the yarn runs. By means of these adjustable crosswise rods, it is possible to give the strands to be formed different lengths. The whole object is painted green and red and is gilded."Translation of: Czurda, F. A.
