The right to use elaborately decorated spears at dances had to be earned, either through a successful headhunt or by setting fire to a village. However, this privilege could also be granted by village elders. The decorative goat hair affected ballistics to such an extent that the decorated spears could only be used as status indicators at ceremonial occasions, but could not be used in hunting or war.
