Lamak Ornament

Lamak

um 1935 | Helene Potjewijd

The small triangles of the frame of lamak are called gigin barong, 'the sharp teeth of a mythical animal'. The name of the geometric pattern is compang banggul, 'bamboo staircase'. Both cili seem to be protected by an umbrella, a sign of honour. This umbrella is in fact a gunung or mountain motif, balancing on top of a trunk like the crown of a tree or a flower on its stalk.
