Brusttuch, Batik
Kemben
vor 1925 | Österreichisches Handelsmuseum, Wien
A batik cloth that serves as a breast scarf, with an elongated green diamond in the middle, called sindangan, surrounded by cemukiran (flame-like ornaments). The motif of the cloth is a rooster sitting on a saron (gamelan instrument) and adorned with two flowers.Kemben is a scarf that is wrapped around the upper body and worn over a kain panjang (waist scarf). If you look at the depictions in Javanese temples, you can see that this type of clothing has been popular since the 8th century. Even today, this off-the-shoulder garment is worn during numerous Indonesian rituals, traditional Javanese dances and palace ceremonies in the Javanese palaces (kraton). The bare shoulders that are visible when wearing kembes can be seen as an expression of aesthetics, elegance and femininity. It is unfortunate that this garment is being pushed more and more into the background.
