Note: The following text is taken from a 19th-century collection catalog and, in its language and perspective, partially reflects colonial thought patterns. We present the text in its original version to make the collection's history transparent and promote a critical examination of the colonial legacy. Certain terms and formulations may be perceived as problematic today. A 2009 research project concluded that most descriptions are factually correct and still usable; only a few details were found to be inaccurate or incorrect. Head cloths - "Udeng" Usually darkly dyed head cloths with simple designs, by which the blue and brown colors predominate. A better and finer piece of work and only worn by the true Javanese, whereby the cloth lies tightly on the head. The long hair of the man is pulled together at the back of the head in a knot and hidden completely under the cloth. The cloth is so artfully folded - and not tied - that one cannot see the ends from the outside, a specialty of a true Javanese. The three present cloths all come from the kingdom "Surukarta"."
