Objects Of Memory (Tazeen Qayum)

n the tradition of Miniature Painting of the Sub-Continent, one does not encounter paintings that could be categorized as ‘still life’, as we understand the term in western art history, predominantly in the 16th century where the the representation of inanimate objects became a genre in itself and objects appeared to be suspended in time and arranged by the hand of the artist. In the final year of my art degree in miniature paining, in 1996, I experimented and pushed the boundaries of the tradition, by carefully selecting objects to create a series of still life paintings in the style of miniature painting, recording memories and events in my life.
