Shivalingam
18th century | Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este
The shaft of the lingam is naturalistically shaped as Shiva's head. If an aniconic lingam is seen as a visible sign of the highest, non-representable form of the god (in which his power to create the world rests), Shiva gradually takes shape in the process of creation, whereby the lingam can be given a face.
