Trousers of an Odissi dance costume

20. Jahrhundert | anonym

Odissi is a traditional Indian dance style. In the past, the women’s sari, which consisted of a length of fabric at least five to six metres long, was tied into trousers and draped over the chest. Today, dancers usually wear draped pants that are partially sewn: The waistband and crotch are tailored, while the trouser legs are formed by an ingenious method of winding the silk fabric and fastened with snap buttons. The sewn trousers also include a pleated ‘fan’ and a seat tied around the waist. Both are fragments of the sari, which was once wrapped in one piece, and show its woven borders.
