Water puppet, Tu Dao Hanh
20. Jahrhundert | Christian Schicklgruber
Water puppet theatre has been a tradition in Vietnam for almost a thousand years. A sequence of scenes from political and religious history and situations from everyday life are performed in the village pond.
The figure of the founder of the water puppet theatre - Tu Dao Hanh - is carried on a throne in a procession accompanied by musicians. Tu Dao Hanh lived in the belief of the local population from 1010 to 1225 and appeared in the world in three guises: as a healer endowed with magical powers, as a Buddhist monk and as King Ly Than Tong. The procession is accompanied by a song:
The seventh day of the seventh monthThe day of the solemn processionWe carry the statue of Tu Dao Hanh to the templeThe anniversary of the ancestor's death is the day of his worshipOn this day we show our eternal veneration
