Worship of a stupa

2./3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. | A. K. Süß-Lindert

It is not clear whether the group of figures is worshipping a stupa as such or whether the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni kept inside are being worshipped. The figures arranged in pairs to the left and right of the stupa in prayer posture are each framed by a female tree goddess. In this way, deities from the pre-Buddhist Indian pantheon were integrated into Buddhist art.
