Blood Sacrifice

ca. 1925 | Paul Schebesta

Trees uprooted in storms present a great danger in the forest. Therefore the Semang view storms as a punishment by the god Karei for offenses committed. In order to appease him, they sacrifice blood to him from their leg calves. Here, Timun flings water and blood as a sacrifice into the sky, using a scoop made out of coconut shells.
