Lamak Ornament

Lamak

ca. 1935 | Helene Potjewijd

In this symbolic interpretation, the lamak is essentially a connection between macro‑ and microcosm, buana agung and buana alit, universe and human being. The base layer of each lamak is said to be the empty Earth on which the creation is depicted in the form of the various motifs, and the position of the ornaments reflects the vertical structure of the universe.
