Laughing Buddha

20th century | Gerard van Bussel

The figure is filled with cereal grains, colourful gemstones, and a “golden” pendant. These precious objects are supposed to prevent evil spirits from taking possession of the otherwise empty Buddha figures which are meant to be placed on the altar. Made in Mexico, this statue was sold at the Templo y Botánica San Simón de los Llanos in Los Angeles.
