Buddha

2. / 3. Jahrhundert | Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Wien

Buddha sits in a meditation posture (vajrasana) with his gaze turned downwards and his eyes half-closed. The delicately moulded face with its inward gaze points to the artist's mastery in depicting mental states. The hand position shows the gesture of "exposition of the wheel of teaching" (dharmacakramudra). The drapery of his monk's robe is typical of the Greek influences on Buddhist art at this time.
